Testicular Mesothelioma

Testicular mesothelioma is a very rare form of mesothelioma, compared to other more common types of mesothelioma like pleural and peritoneal. Testicular mesothelioma forms on the tunica vaginalis, which is a membrane on the lining of the testes. Testicular mesothelioma develops as cancerous nodules throughout the testes and scrotum. Testicular mesothelioma, though still a rare and aggressive cancer, is less lethal than other forms of mesothelioma. This is because the cancer is relatively localized and affects a less essential organ, unlike pleural, pericardial and peritoneal mesothelioma, which affect the lungs, heart and peritoneum, respectively.

Symptoms of Testicular Mesothelioma

The symptoms of testicular mesothelioma are often similar to other more common conditions, such as hernias, other cancers or testicular ailments. Two common symptoms of testicular mesothelioma are a build-up of fluid in the scrotum called hydrocele and a painless mass in the testicles. If you have pain or a mass in your testicles, your doctor can take a biopsy to test for the presence of mesothelioma.

Treatment of Testicular Mesothelioma

The most common treatment for testicular mesothelioma is surgery to remove the tumor. Depending on how advanced the tumor is, the surgeon may also need to remove local lymph nodes to check how far the cancer has progressed. Even after surgical intervention, there is a high rate of recurrence in testicular mesothelioma patients. Patients may also be treated with chemotherapy and radiation, but due to the location of the cancer, surgery is typically the best option.
