Asbestos In Ohio

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral with properties that made it ideal for use in a wide range of applications. It is durable, can be mixed with other materials, acts as an excellent insulator, and is resistant to fire and chemicals. These properties made it attractive for manufacturers and companies to use in their products and buildings. However, it became apparent over time that people who were exposed to asbestos were developing mesothelioma years or decades after inhaling the fibers.

At-Risk Individuals

Workers in certain industries, such as steel, chemical and power, are at a greater risk of asbestos exposure due to the materials they work with on a daily basis. Asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma, but symptoms often do not appear until years or even decades after exposure.

Some industries and job situations put workers at greater risk of asbestos exposure, including:

  • Aerospace
  • Asbestos removal
  • Aviation
  • Automotive
  • Chemical plants
  • Construction
  • Electrical
  • Glass
  • Iron and steel mills
  • Insulation
  • Longshore
  • Maritime
  • Mechanical friction products manufacturing
  • Military
  • Plumbing
  • Railroad
  • Shipyard
  • Textile
  • Tire and rubber
  • Utilities
  • Welding

Asbestos exposure risk is not limited to these sites. Schools and homes can jeopardize the lives of children and adults, as can living near a plant or other facility where asbestos is used, or washing the clothes of someone who worked with asbestos.
